With the aforementioned said, I find your claims about the Roman Republic suspect at best and won't take your word for it unless you can provide me with solid evidence supporting your claim. Let's also remember that the more a certain behavior is suppressed (especially with violence), the more likely you are to have abuses associated with that behavior. This is very evident in many Southern and South-western Asian countries as well as northern Africa!

@hylas79 - WADR you believe wrong! People in ancient times engaged in rather sick, repulsive and abominable behaviors. Rape, cutting off of genitals, being impaled by a well-endowed statue and the like were commonplace. It gets worse from there! Nevertheless, THIS was the type of immorality that was condemned! Also, you have to understand what the definitions of the day meant, and what adultery meant then and what it means now were quite different. (cont.)
